The United Nations University International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) will host a public seminar on Wednesday, 13 June 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. SCHEMA (“Systems Thinking and Place-Based Methods for Healthier Malaysian Cities”) alumni will present their work in Malaysia and the UK on systems thinking for health.

Seminar 1: Place matters in systems thinking to improve public health
Dr. Yi Gong, Research Fellow, Cardiff University Sustainable Places Research Institute and School of Medicine
Dr. Gong’s research focuses on relationships between environment and human health. As a health and environmental geographer, she integrates knowledge across disciplines, exploring ways to develop a better understanding of (1) the interplay of social, economic and environmental factors in relation to human health, (2) the impact of place-making (especially transport options and green space) on health outcomes, and (3) resilience and social vulnerability in relation to natural hazards and climate-related disasters.
Seminar 2: Systems thinking in designing research: Exploring the connections between food and health
Esther Sinirisan Chong, Analyst, The Penang Institute in KL
Ms. Chong, born and raised in the Land Below the Wind (Sabah, East Malaysia), trained in International and Strategic Studies and History at University Malaya. Her research interests lie in the history and heritage of East Malaysia, town history, education and government policy. Currently, her main research focuses on government policies linked to food sustainability. She also contributes regularly to various English and Chinese language newspapers, writing on topics that range from socio-cultural to environmental and public policy issues.
