Ideally, health care is delivered by trained and motivated health-care providers in dedicated facilities supported by a well-maintained infrastructure with adequate funding, strong health plans and evidence-based policies. However, this ideal remains a pipe dream for many countries and this situation is worsened by the expected reduction of international funding for health, the shortage of health workers worldwide, and the humanitarian crises affecting 20 percent of the world’s population.

It is clear that innovative strategies that go beyond conventional health sector is urgently needed. Self-care interventions have been touted to be among the most promising and exciting new approaches to address this.

Come learn how these interventions have the potential to increase choice, as well as opportunities for individuals to make informed decisions regarding their health and health care. Study how approaches that uses the individuals as active agents in their own health care through user autonomy and peer support, and the role of various stakeholders in making this possible.

    Speakers:

Dr Austen El Osta is the Director of the Self-Care Academic Research Unit of Imperial College London School of Public Health.

Dr David Webber is the President of the International Self-Care Foundation.
