The recently established Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health is delighted to announce a new fortnightly seminar series open to all. The Series accompanies the development of the Commission, inviting Commissioners and Co-Chairs to discuss a key topic, question, or challenge that the Commission hopes to tackle. The series aims to involve a range of stakeholders and voices in its work and promote discussion and debate on gender and health.

In the thirteenth event of the series, we will hear from Commissioners Sharon Friel, Professor of Health Equity and Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Governance at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), Australian National University, and Sarah Hill, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Global Health Policy Unit at the University of Edinburgh:

Scholarship on the commercial determinants of health (CDoH) seeks to understand the multiple ways corporate policies, practices and products affect population health. To date, there has been limited attention paid to the ways in which the CDoH engage with and impact on gender inequalities and health. We address this gap by examining evidence on the practices and strategies of two industries—tobacco and alcohol—and their interaction with gender, with a particular focus on women. We examine how these industries engage with women in their marketing and corporate social responsibility activities, reinforcing problematic gender norms and stereotypes that harm women and girls. We then examine how tobacco and alcohol companies contribute to gender inequalities through a range of strategies intended to protect their market freedoms and privileged position in society. By reinforcing gender inequalities at multiple levels, CDoH undermine the health of women and girls and exacerbate global health inequalities.

About the Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health

In August 2020, a new Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health was launched. The Commission, with three co-chairs and 25 commissions, has been set up with the explicit and uncompromising aim to move beyond the evidence to catalyse action on gender and global health. The Commission is being co-chaired by UCL Centre for Gender and Global Health Director, Sarah Hawkes; Director of the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health, Pascale Allotey; and Chair of the Kofi Annan Foundation and former Secretary-General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Elhadj As Sy.
